The PRS Silver Sky represents an idealized take on a vintage single-coil guitar, where every meticulous detail comes together to distinguish it from both its contemporaries and its historical counterparts. Born from the close collaboration between Grammy Award-winning musician John Mayer and Paul Reed Smith, this guitar is the culmination of years of development. It seamlessly combines Mayer and Smith's preferred aspects from 1963 and 1964 instruments with a modern twist, offering the warmth and familiarity of a classic guitar coupled with the finesse of a brand-new instrument.
Notable features encompass the headstock shape, tuners, bridge, pickups, neck, and fretboard choices. The headstock shape, based on PRS's iconic design, is inverted to accommodate Mayer's playing style while maintaining a consistent string length behind the nut, enhancing tuning stability. The tuners are vintage-style, closed-back tuners with PRS's locking mechanism. The steel tremolo leverages PRS's patented design with Gen III knife-edge screws, positioned flush to the body in the neutral position, allowing the bridge to only lower the pitch. This increased contact with the body enhances the guitar's acoustic volume and improves the signal-to-noise ratio of the single-coil pickups.
The 635JM single-coil pickups deliver a rounded and full sound, characterized by a musical high end that avoids being excessively sharp or harsh.
The Silver Sky offers a choice between a rosewood or maple fretboard. The maple fretboard version retains the original 635JM neck shape, while the rosewood fretboard option features subtle shoulder modifications for a more rounded feel. Both neck shapes were meticulously designed through research on vintage instruments and Mayer's on-stage testing to ensure a comfortable playing experience. The fretboard radius for both options is 7.25".
Additional premium features include a bone nut, a molded metal jack plate (designed for easy cable plugging and unplugging), re-engineered knobs, and PRS's accessible double action truss rod, conveniently adjusted from the front of the headstock.
