I am 55 and have been playing since i was around 19 years old. I was pretty much self taught. I knew bits and pieces of things like the pentatonic scales and i could play simple chords. I started taking lessons from Tim and a huge lightbulb came on.I told him when i started that i felt like i sucked at guitar. He sat me down and evaluated my playing. He then took everything i knew, introduced some new stuff and tied it all together. At the end of my second or third lesson, he said let me tell you something...you don't suck. He had me playing things i never knew i had the ability to play. I am about 2 months into lessons and i couldn't be happier with my progress. I can actually sit down with some backing tracks and just play along. Definitely give them a try, Guitars on Main is amazing.

Great store and great instructors. I'm 60 and only picked up a guitar a few years ago. To add to it I'm left handed! Chris is patient and makes learning enjoyable. I look forward to my lessons every week. You aren't going to find a better guitar shop.

Bob has been a great teacher for our daughter, who has been taking lessons for more than a year. He's patient and very laid-back when working with our laid-back kid -- and it's teaching her that learning to play an instrument, even when there are stumbling blocks, can be a joy, not a chore. They're working on both acoustic and electric, and he chooses music that stretches her skills a bit and takes her musical taste into consideration. Plus, he's a great musician himself -- not all musicians can teach, but he can, and does it well.

Kyle Hancock is a professional musician that works in the Central Pennsylvania area, and a graduate of Millersville University (B.A Music Business Technology, Class of 2018). Kyle communicates the fundamentals of music through contemporary, classical, and jazz studies on guitar, bass, and ukulele for students of all ages and skill levels. A teacher with Guitars on Main since 2017, Kyle continues to organize yearly recitals for his students at Twisted Bine Brewery, located across the street from Guitars on Main. Mark Rambler is a legendary Lancaster guitarist with deep roots in the hard rock and metal scene of the 1980s. As the guitarist for Killerhit, he played packed venues across Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey, gaining real-world experience that shapes his teaching today. Born into a multigenerational family of musicians, Mark brings decades of playing, listening, and songwriting to his lessons. His approach emphasizes a strong ear, musical intuition, and finding the simplest, most effective way to play what you want to play so students progress faster and stay inspired.

Guitar Lesson FAQ's

The following are rates for 30 minute lessons:

 Kyle Hancock $35.00 per lesson

Chris Koehler $30.00 per lesson

Tim Dougherty $35.00 per lesson

Mark Rambler $35.00 per lesson

Robert Putt $40.00 per lesson

Policies and rates may vary with each teacher. Below are the policies for lessons with Robert Putt.

If it is a 5 week month, the lesson studio will be closed on days that would fall on the 5th week.

There will be no refunds for missed lessons. The time was booked and we have to charge for it. It would not be fair to our teachers to suffer income loss due to frequent cancellations of any kind. However, we will issue a make-up credit if 24-hour notice was given. You have 120 days to use your make-up credit provided there is a make-up slot open in our schedule.

This cancellation policy includes scheduled vacations. Our studio would suffer much income loss if we allowed exceptions for vacations. Please keep in mind if you cancel lessons for the month of a scheduled vacation, you risk losing your slot to a new student sign-up.

If a teacher is sick or on vacation, we will provide you with a make-up lesson or issue a credit on your next billing statement.

Guitars on Main reserves the right to change and update these policies at any time.

We believe that getting an early start learning an instrument is a great idea.

However, for guitar lessons, we generally recommend a minimum age of 7 years old. This is because most children at this age have developed the necessary fine motor skills and cognitive abilities needed to learn guitar effectively.

That being said, we understand that every child is unique and some may be ready to start learning guitar at a younger age. If you have a child who is younger than 7 and interested in taking guitar lessons, we're happy to give it a try! After a month of lessons, we'll be able to assess whether or not they're ready to continue.

Ultimately, the decision to start guitar lessons at a younger age should be based on the individual child's readiness and interest. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact us for more information.

If a student wants to learn rock or metal music, for example, an electric guitar would be a better choice as it can produce the distorted tones and sustain required for those genres. However, if a student is interested in playing folk or acoustic music, an acoustic guitar would be more appropriate.
