1975 Gibson Flying V

1975 Gibson Flying V Natural
This1975 Gibson Flying V captures one of the most important periods in the history of Gibson’s radical V shaped guitar. Finished inNatural, the exposed wood gives this vintage Flying V a distinctly different character from the more common white and later black examples.
The Flying V had originally appeared in the late 1950s, but it was Gibson’s mahogany version introduced in the late 1960s that established the format most players associate with the vintage V. By 1975, Gibson was producing the model with amahogany body, set mahogany neck, rosewood fingerboard, and 22 frets. Period examples were made in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
The Natural finish is especially well suited to the mahogany construction, leaving the grain visible rather than hiding it beneath an opaque color. A documented all original 1975 Natural Flying V shows the same understated appearance and thin body associated with these mid 1970s examples.
Two humbuckers provide the straightforward control layout and powerful sound that helped make the Flying V a fixture of hard rock.
The combination of the lightweight V shaped body, set mahogany neck, Tune O Matic style bridge and stop tailpiece gives these guitars a direct, lively response. Despite its dramatic shape, the Flying V is also remarkably comfortable to play standing, with excellent access to the upper frets.
By the mid 1970s, the Flying V had become closely associated with the emerging hard rock and heavy rock scene. Today, an original 1975 example sits in an interesting place in Gibson history. It is a genuine vintage Gibson from the Kalamazoo era and part of the generation that helped turn the Flying V from an unusual late 1950s design into one of the company’s enduring icons.
