1977 Gibson SG Standard

This1977 Gibson SG Standard comes from Gibson’s Kalamazoo era and represents a distinctive chapter in the evolution of the SG. By the late 1970s, the Standard had taken on several features that clearly separate these guitars from both the earlier 1960s versions and today’s reissues.

The basic construction remained classic Gibson. Period 1977 SG Standards are documented with asolid mahogany body, set mahogany neck, bound rosewood fingerboard, 22 frets, and a 24.75 inch scale length.

One of the defining features of the era is the three piece mahogany neck found on documented 1977 examples. The neck is paired with a bound rosewood fingerboard and block position markers, giving these guitars the unmistakable look of a 1970s SG Standard.

Controls follow the familiar Gibson arrangement with an individual volume and tone control for each pickup and a three way selector switch.

Hardware on these mid 1970s SG Standards typically includes aGibson Harmonica style Tune O Matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece, another immediately recognizable feature of the period.

With its lightweight double cutaway design and excellent access to the upper frets, the SG remains one of Gibson’s most player friendly solidbody designs. A genuine 1977 Standard adds nearly five decades of history to that familiar formula.
