The Explorer first hit the scene in 1958. It was a little ahead of its time at launch, but players grew into it as the years rolled on. By the 1970s, rock guitarists were drawn to its bold, futuristic shape and big, aggressive sound. In the hard rocking 1980s, the Explorer truly found its home, showing up in the hands of players who helped define the decade. The Explorer 80s EMG takes its inspiration from the well known 1984 style Explorer, a model celebrated for its unmistakable look and massive tones. Explorers have been played by artists like The Edge, Billy Gibbons, and James Hetfield, helping cement the guitar’s legendary reputation.

The Explorer 80s EMG is built with a fast, comfortable mahogany neck featuring a 60s SlimTaper profile. A rosewood fretboard with 22 medium jumbo frets and clean pearloid dot inlays keeps the feel familiar and easy to navigate. Up top, the Explorer headstock is fitted with mini die cast tuners and a Graph Tech nut for dependable tuning stability. Down at the bridge, the strings ride over an Epiphone LockTone Tune O Matic bridge and anchor to a LockTone Stop Bar tailpiece.

The iconic mahogany Explorer body is loaded with active EMG pickups, an EMG 60 in the neck and an EMG 81 in the bridge. Together they deliver the thick, powerful voice and long sustain many players associate with 80s era Explorers. The system runs on a 9 volt battery, with a rear battery compartment designed for quick access. Controls are straightforward and stage ready, with individual volume controls for each pickup and a master tone control, all topped with knurled metal knobs. With no pickguard, the Explorer 80s EMG has a sleek, stripped down look that matches its attitude.
